Root Access For All: Virtualisation tricks with User-Mode Linux

Matthew Bloch, Bytemark Hosting

Summary

Linux has been ported to many different machine architectures, but a true milestone was passed with its first port to "itself", that's Linux running on another Linux. User-Mode Linux is the first free port of the kernel which allows many different kernels to run quickly and simply on commodity server hardware, and is the technology that Matthew and Peter from Bytemark built their hosting business around.

Matthew will explain how to compile, manage and network User-Mode Linux kernels. He will talk through some of the current and developing applications for this exciting technology, as well as a looking at "competing" technologies such as CoLinux and Xen.
