The Castle Hotel in the Northern Quarter.

Transport
- ———
Parking: The venue parking facilities are not amazing. There are
parking meter bays on the street but it’s very expensive, only really
good for a short stop. There are paid parking lots around the venue,
the light blue P in this OpenStreetMap centred on The Castle Hotel
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/53.48356/-2.23386 , though we can’t
vouch for how good they are. A lot of them, perhaps all, are are owned
by NCP http://www.ncp.co.uk/ . If you can’t decide otherwise then park
in Manchester Arndale.

Public Transport:
Manchester Victoria (MCV) train station, Shudehill tram station and
Manchester Piccadilly bus station are all fairly close to The Castle
Hotel, see http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/53.48356/-2.23386

train station and Manchester Central Coach Station are not too far either.

Location: Madlab. (Manchester Digital Laboratory) – temporary location.
Address: New Federation House, M60 0AF
Entrance: Our entrance is not the main NFH entrance (which is on Federation Street), it is on Dantzic Street, next to Dantzic House are some big black gates on the front of a building (if you click on the Google Map link, you will see a man in a red T shirt in front of them). Enter here and there is a door to your immediate left.

New Federation House (NFH). It’s run by Castlefield Gallery. See here for more details on the CG site.

Date: Saturday, 30th August 2014
Starts: 14:00
Approximate finish: 17:00

Summary:

This will be a general meeting, but I would like to discuss our open day on 18th October. At this point I would like to ask for volunteers for then to meet and greet people, bring a laptop along so we can have the various aspects on display etc. More will be explained during this months meeting.

IMPORTANT UPDATE (29/08/2014):

The venue is now MadLab (not at the temporary location of New Federation House address advertised above). Apologies for the last-minute change. The move in date to NFH was delayed from today to tomorrow at the last minute and so the set up there will not be optimal.

A Madlab staff member will be at NFH to direct people to MadLab if anyone goes to the advertised address. It’s just a couple of minutes walk back to Edge St.

Summary:

This month will be a planning meeting for the August meeting, my initial idea was to have the talk in July but I then thought it might be better to make sure we get time to plan it properly. As discussed over a cold beer and other beverages at Terrace after last months talk it was decided that this meeting should be, details bulleted below:

Target audience – aimed at users who are new to Linux

Objective – Essentials for new users coming to Linux

Topics to be covered – web browsers, email clients, music player, irc

Distro – Linux Mint – MATE

This is possibly the most important point, if you know anybody who may be interested in coming along so we are not giving the talk to each other, if you can forward it on to anybody of interest.

Starts: 14:00
Approximate finish: 17:00

Summary:

This talk will be given by myself, it will be a server sprint. I require assistance finishing off the build on the Manlug VPS very kindly provided for free by Melbourne Hosting. I’ve done alot of work on it but I still need to install the webserver and do some hardening. This project would I think benifit from multiple sets of eyes seeing it from a different prespective and those who have more experience than myself. The distro being used is Centos, so if you have production experience that would be extremely useful, but of course any distro would be appreciated.

Update (10/4/14):

Madlab have a course that day and the buzzer sounds upstairs when you ring the bell outside. I’ll be standing at the door on the 19/04 from about 13.40 until about 14:10, if you happen to arrive after this time please knock on the door.

Manlug meeting February 2014

The Manlug meeting for February 2014 is taking place on 22nd February, please note later date
(fourth Saturday this month), details below:

Details below:

Location: Madlab. (Manchester Digital Laboratory).
Address: 36-40 Edge Street, Manchester. M4 1HN.

Common)”
Date: Saturday, 22nd February 2014
Starts: 14:00
Approximate finish: 17:00 ”

Summary:

This talk will be given by myself, it will be an introduction to bash scripting at the basic level, everything from the shebang to loops.
It is an unbelievably useful skill to have. I have for example written a simple script at home that tells the rest of the family if they should remove the RJ-45 cable from the home plug
(we have dodgy old Victorian wiring) or reboot the modem when the internet stops working as I got fed up having to work out why. It also then logs the results.

Update : 16/03/2014

Manlug meeting January 2014

The Manlug meeting for January 2014 is taking place on 18th January
(third Saturday), details below, back to the original location this month:

Summary:

There is no particular subject this particular month, but I know one
person is attending who requires assistance with updating Suse which I
will be downloading for him. Another individual from a local IT company
has expressed interest to come along to see who we are and discuss
things. I should be able to write a basic talk for February on bash
scripting. If you have any burning desire to do a talk in March onwards
please let me know.
